Music theory courses are designed to teach students to correctly identify and then write musical terms and notation on paper. This is often a great opportunity to consolidate the concepts being learned in instrument lessons. Taking part in a theory course can boost the student's confidence and performance in his or her regular lessons, however, it is not necessary to already be taking instrument lessons in order to participate.
Theory courses are provided for different levels, from absolute beginner to advanced. The beginner classes are generally aimed at younger children, while older beginners often are able to jump straight to the intermediate courses. The advanced classes would be a helpful supplement for anyone studying music for ATAR, or who are simply keen to continue with music exams for their own development.
Most of the beginner courses and some of the intermediate courses include an online AMEB (Australian Music Examination Board) exam, usually taken during the last session of the course. Once you sign up to a course, you come away not just with new knowledge, but a recognised certificate as well!
Music history courses are open to anyone to join, musician or not. It is helpful to have at least completed a beginner or intermediate theory course first, but is not strictly necessary. The courses are arranged by historical periods, and are adapted to a range of ages, depending on enrolments.
Open study days are great for students who have work to complete, and wish for a constructive study environment with a teacher on-hand to help with any questions or challenges that come up. These sessions are very flexible and may include a range of ages and levels of study.
